Throughout my long life of athletic participation and spectatorship, I have been mesmerized by what the human body can accomplish, the heights to which we can soar, the power with which we can throw, hit, swing, run, and slam into another being or to the floor. All in the name of getting stronger, faster, better, achieving more. We push up against, and then beyond, what we thought were our limits. It requires a committed heart and a focused mind, and the willingness to try, try again.
It has always been my goal in painting to capture a moment, whether it be a private moment with a horse and its human companion, or a moment of sunlight cast upon a perfectly ripe fig. Nowhere is the moment more compelling to me, however, than in THE moment of athletic endeavour where the action is at its most powerful, where the ball is being redirected, where the jumper is at her peak, where the focus is most intense. This is what I try to capture through intense color and rugged strokes, zeroing in on the moment. That moment is what an athlete works untold hours to achieve, on the court, in the gym, on the field. In laying down layer after layer of color, moving the figure, changing the focus, allowing the work to show through, and eventually coming to the moment when the painting is complete, I try to echo the process of the athlete, and honor the effort.
